🪄 BLACK MAGIC

In the early 1980s, South Carolina football was searching for an identity — a program adrift and hungry for respect. Part One of Black Magic: The Story of the 1984 Gamecocks sets the stage with the arrival of head coach Joe Morrison, whose quiet intensity would spark a cultural shift in Columbia. Through the eyes of players, journalists, and lifelong fans, we revisit a program standing at the edge of transformation. The ’84 season begins with a tense, hard-fought win over The Citadel — a shaky opening act that hinted at the unforgettable storm to come.

We've made it through the first bye weekend, ready to turn our attention to a trip to Baton Rouge to take on LSU. Todd Ellis and Coach Shane Beamer recap the season to this point, hand out some early superlatives, and preview the upcoming stretch of ranked SEC opponents.

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Game Ball For The Gamecock. Former Gamecock Rico Dowdle had a huge Sunday with the Carolina Panthers! He rushed for 206 yards on 23 carries with a touchdowns. He tied for the second-highest single-game rushing total in franchise history. He added 28 receiving yards on three catches. Dowdle’s former Gamecock teammate Xavier Legette also found the endzone for the first time this season.

🔺 Early Risers. Gamecock football will host Oklahoma at either noon or 12:45 p.m. ET on Oct. 18. The game will be televised on either ABC or the SEC Network. This will be Oklahoma’s first trip to Columbia. The Gamecocks downed the Sooners 35-9 in Norman last season.

🔺 Cancelation. South Carolina and Miami canceled their 2026 and 2027 football series due to both conferences moving to nine-game schedules. South Carolina has a non-conference home game against Towson and a road game at Clemson on its 2026 slate and will look for a third non-conference opponent.
