🔼 An SEC Back. When it comes to Mario Anderson’s breakout this season, the running back gives all the credit to South Carolina’s coaching staff for helping to shape him into what he calls an “SEC back.”
“Coming from Newberry to South Carolina, I knew it was going to be a jump, but that’s why I challenged myself to be able to make that jump,” Anderson said on 107.5 The Game this week. “I didn’t come in here with any expectations of anything of any sort. It’s been a blessing to be able to come here and Coach Mo being able to strip down my game and rebuild me, not only as a player but as a man. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to work with him and work with Coach Beamer and Coach Loggains and everybody and be around the guys to mold me into an SEC back.”
🔼 Gamecocks Doing Great Things. Former Gamecock tennis star Ingrid Martins posted a huge upset at the China Open this week as she and her doubles partner, Luisa Stefani, took down WTA No. 4 Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in three sets!
🔼 She’s Different. Coach Dawn Staley has big praise for South Carolina freshman Milaysia Fulwiley as the guard gets used to life on campus.
“She’s different,” Staley said. “She’s different than all of them. She’s different in that she can do things that the freshmen that came in before her, they just couldn’t do the things that she can do with the basketball. She defends as well.”
Read more about Fulwiley’s transition to the college game and how Coach Staley sees her role on the court shaping up this season.
🔼 Riders Of The Month. Two Gamecocks are your NCEA Riders of the Month! Natalie Jayne earned the honor in Flat and Fences, while Chloe Stephenson won the award for Reining. It marks the first time since 2013 that South Carolina riders have earned three of the four possible honors available!
🔼 Moving On. Sarah Hamner and Ayana Akli both advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships in straight-set wins! No. 7 Akli took down No. 32 Florencia Urrutia 6-2, 7-6, while No. 25 Hamner beat No. 62 Maria Aguiar 6-4, 6-3. Both will take on challengers today with spots in the quarterfinals on the line.
