It’s The CockTale Hour! If you missed last night’s episode, don’t fret. Head on over to GamecocksPlus.com and enjoy Jay and Bill breaking down the biggest moments in South Carolina Athletics from the week — and there were a lot of them! We’re diving into men’s hoops’ huge win over Kentucky and talking with men’s tennis’ Connor Thomson after the squad knocked off top-ranked Virginia.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Geaux Gamecocks. South Carolina is still perfect! Gamecock women’s basketball got balanced scoring to defeat No. 9 LSU on the road yesterday, 76-70, in a tight contest. Chloe Kitts led the Gamecocks with 14 points, while Raven Johnson added 13, Te-Hina Paopao scored 12, Kamilla Cardoso scored 11, and Bree Hall posted 10 in the win. Bree gave South Carolina the lead for good with just over one minute to play from beyond the arc — go ahead, watch the game-winner here.

And look who was in the stands cheering on some of her former teammates!

🔼 In The Circle. South Carolina softball pitcher Alana Vawter is a preseason All-SEC Team selection as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Vawter spent four seasons with Stanford before making the cross-country move to Columbia as a graduate transfer. Vawter led the Cardinal to the Women’s College World Series with a 21-8 record and four saves last season. She averaged 1.11 walks in seven innings (good for 24th in the nation) and a 1.81 ERA.

🔼 Someone You Can Count On. And speaking of South Carolina’s pitching staff, two new faces are ready to make a big impact in the Garnet & Black this season. Vawter and freshman Sage Mardjetko are looking to shut down opposing batters this season. Mardjetko, last year’s USA Today High School Sports Award National Player of the Year, went 23-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a dozen no-hitters as she dominated Illinois high school softball. She and Vawter have bonded on and off the field:

“We work well together. She is a super-sweet person and so genuine. She is a great teammate who is always there for you. When you’re playing at this level in the SEC, you need someone you can count on. She tells me to trust my pitches through the zone. When you’re in high school, you can get away with hitters swinging at balls. She tells me that I have good pitches and that I’m here for a reason, so I should trust my stuff through the zone.”

🔼 Learning To Fly. MiLaysia Fulwiley is fast becoming a household name in women’s college basketball. The freshman superstar sat down with The Athletic to talk about life in Columbia, her family ties, and how she stays grounded even when she has stars like Magic Johnson and Kevin Durant looking her way.
