Changing Expectations: Chapter 6: As we near March, and a possible tournament bid, everyone knows it takes every player and coach on the team to make a deep run-- but what if it takes even more than that? A name many Gamecock fans might be familiar with is back with the team, and might be even more valuable now than in the 90s when he was known as "The Captain."
In our latest chapter of Changing Expectations, coming out tonight exclusively on Gamecocks+, the team hits their first real speed bump, but between the veteran players, seasoned coaches, and the man affectionately called "The Godfather of South Carolina Basketball," they're back on track and poised to make a run.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Battle Back. What a win for South Carolina men’s basketball on the road last night in College Station. Meechie Johnson led the way for the Gamecocks with 22 points, but it was Zachary Davis’ bucket with three seconds left that delivered the 70-68 win for South Carolina.
The Aggies used a 7-0 run to grab a 50-47 lead with 8:29 to go in the game before the Gamecocks roared back with a 6-0 run of their own to go back on top, 63-59, with 3:11 to play. Check out our favorite second-half moments from the win here, here, and here.
The Gamecocks are now 23-5 on the season (11-4 SEC) and will play Florida at Colonial Life Arena on Saturday afternoon.
🔼 X-Factor. Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy knows Xavier Legette is the type of receiver NFL teams want. Nagy took to Twitter this week to highlight why Legette is “what NFL scouts are looking for: big physical receivers who can win at LOS and separate. Hard to find 225-lbers who can drop their weight and create space.”
🔼 SEC Legend. Former Gamecock Joe Rhett is South Carolina’s representative in the 2024 SEC Men’s Legends Presented by Allstate class. Rhett will be honored at halftime of Gamecock men’s basketball’s opening game at the SEC Tournament in Nashville.
🔼 National Spotlight. Kamilla Cardoso and Te-Hina Paopao are both on the Ann Meyers Drysdale USBWA National Player of the Year Watch List! Cardoso leads the Gamecocks in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double with 14.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Paopao’s sharp shooting from downtown is only getting better - she’s leading the nation in three-point shooting at 48.9 percent while dishing out 3.7 assists per game.
🔼 Tight At Tight End. As former Gamecock Trey Knox takes the field at the NFL Combine this week, 247Sports takes a historic dive into why South Carolina is one of the premier schools for producing fantastic tight ends - and why that trend isn’t expected to slow down anytime soon.
