Cock-A-Doodle Brew 9/25: Explosions everywhere
Today: Leading the nation, ground game, and more.
:
Good morning. “Touchdown, Carolina! Touchdown, Xavier Legette!”
And don’t look now, but guess who leads the nation in receiving yards?
What else is mixed in today’s Brew? ⤵️
💥 Explosions everywhere
🏈 Ground game
🤙 And much, much more
🎥 GAMECOCKS+
In The Trenches. Spencer Rattler’s incredible success starts with his offensive line, and on this week’s episode of Gamecock Talk, we sit down with offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley. Teasley, who’s been with South Carolina for three years, is in his first official season as o-line coach. This is his story.
📈 STOCK UP
🔼 Explosions Everywhere. South Carolina’s passing offense is hot, hot, hot. With QB1 completing 90% (!!!) of his passes for 288 yards and three scores against Mississippi State, the South Carolina air attack is now:
No. 1 in the SEC in yards per game with an average of 340
No. 1 in the SEC in pass attempts per game at 32
No. 1 in the SEC in explosive passing plays of 40+ yards with 7
No. 1 in completions with 95
No. 2 in completion percentage at 74.2%
🔼 Ground Game. Mario Anderson had a great night for the Gamecocks, logging 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Perhaps even more impressive from Anderson was what didn’t show up on the stat sheet — pass protection.
“Coach Mo, he really emphasizes that, setting a window, shooting our hands up, being really physical,” Anderson said following the game. “That’s every day because we’ve got a guy like Spencer in the backfield. So we have to (protect him). It gets the game going.”
Pass protection is a huge point of emphasis for Coach Hardesty — and he recently joined the Gamecocks+ Film Room to break down how he teaches it in the running backs room.
🔼 Quotable Quotes. Your Gamecocks had a lot to say following Saturday night’s win over Mississippi State. Here are some of our favorites:
“I remember getting a great get off coming around that edge. As I was beating the tackle, I saw the quarterback still had the ball in his hands. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I am fixing to get that.’ As he was about to throw, I just put my hand out there and the ball came. I knew it was out because I hit it.” - Jordan Strachan on his forced fumble
“It was great. I feel like as a defensive player, that is kind of what you live for. Have those big plays and just try and do whatever you can for the team. All that bases really off stopping the run. Especially being in the SEC. Such a physical and run-heavy league. Have to stop the run. Once you do that, then you are able to open and fly around a little more.” - Alex Huntley on the team’s defensive effort
“I would say it is motivation for me because he was a great player and I watched him growing up. I would say that I try to play like him a little bit, how he high points the ball.” - Xavier Legette on Alshon Jeffery’s jersey retirement ceremony
“We talk about the middle eight which is, you defer the ball, you score before half. I think we did that. Winning the middle eight and coming out and scoring again in those first four minutes of the second half. It happens to be the first play. It doesn’t get better than that. Great play. Great connection. It was dialed up perfect.” - Spencer Rattler on his second half-opening TD pass to Xavier Legette
